GAPSA provides Adopters with the opportunity to have a 4-week "trial" period during which they can take their greyhound home and assess his/her suitability to become part of their family.
Should adopters encounter any problems at any point during this time, please call the GAP staff as they are willing to give advice and help in any way, or make arrangements for the collection of the greyhound, if things aren't working out. If after trying hard, things still don't work out between Adopters and their greyhound, GAPSA will happily take the dog back and provide a different greyhound until the right match is achieved.
After the four week trial period has expired the Adoption Agreement comes into to effect and the ownership of your greyhound is then officially transferred to you as the new "forever family".
This contract lists the conditions of purchase stating that adopters will offer a responsible home and undertake to provide necessary suitable food, water, shelter and health care for the life of the greyhound; and allow access for inspection by the Program Management, Greyhound Racing SA animal welfare officer, (or its appointed delegate) at any time should we request this. Adopters also undertake that the animal will not be used for experimental or research purposes of any description and understand that the greyhound cannot be re-entered into the Greyhound Racing fraternity as a race dog.
At this point GAP will supply an "Retired Greyhound Notification" form to the racing department and animal welfare department of Greyhound Racing SA where the details of the adopting family will be registered on the Greyhound Racing SA information system. This is a wonderfully useful reference if a greyhound is ever found running loose, ensuring that it can be identified and returned to it's Adoptive owners immediately.
If you are interested in adopting a greyhound we require you to complete an Application to Adopt Form. (Click here to commence an on-line application).
Please note: You will generally receive an email from GAP within one week of submitting your application. If you haven't received an email within one week, please send us an email or leave a message at the office on 08 8243 7124 so we can check and see if we've received it!
The idea of this is for you as an adopting family to provide us with as much information as possible about the type of dog you want as a pet, your family, your lifestyle and anything else you can think of that will make it easier for us to ensure that we find the right greyhound to fit in with your family.
Feel free to email us at GAPSA or call the office on 08 8243 7124 so that we can discuss it with you if you would like. Sometimes it is good to have a chat about your thoughts first.
